Invites, Postcards, Announcements… and more

Friday, February 1st, 2013

We have options, options, and more options. The options are limitless. Christmas cards, Wedding announcements, Postcards, we even make bookmarks that are a hit at Valentine’s!  Here are just a few for you to look at. I will bring more to you in the near future. Although great to look at, it does not even compare to seeing and feeling them in person. Everyone that has examined these are wowed. Your images truly shine and are complimented perfectly in these printing formats. When you choose a card I will custom design the card for you. We discuss and I give you the option to switch it up or keep it as is. The goal is to make you happy with what you are getting.

I have to say that that Christmas card was one of my favorites. Not only are the kids cute – but the template works perfect for families or children. It is a definite favorite!

I have to say that my 4×9 wedding announcements have had the best feedback! Everyone of my couples have had the greatest response to how amazing these look! Each time I have opened up a new set for examination I just ooo and aaaa myself. What else is cool is that they fit perfectly in a legal size envelope. These cards make sending announcements quite affordable.

The colors are brilliant. There are other sizes and uses for the post card style. You can use them as High School Senior announcements or advertising.

I have also made calendars from these to hand out examples of my own work, made bookmarks for my children, I cannot say enough great things about these.

I am a perfectionist and I have to have my colors just right! I have to have my quality just right – after all, these represent myself as an artist. If you would like a sample of this sent to you feel free to contact us requesting an announcement sample with your address and I will mail it out to you.

MDG Wedding

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

This wedding is extra special to myself because the bride and I are like sisters. Having been a part of each others lives for… well, let’s put it this way, since we were 12 or 13. ;) We even had our first girl together.

Mary and I both found out we were pregnant and with girls at the same time. The babies were due within days of themselves or on the same day. It was her 3rd child, my first… but it was a girl for both of us. Our Heavenly Twins!

Mary and I had sleep overs almost every to every other weekend. I was always at her house. Their home was my safe place and essentially, my own family. They treated me as one of their own. So it is only natural that I would be at her wedding. I would not miss it for the world. The only thing that made it better for me was the opportunity to not just be there, but to be her photographer. So a HUGE thank you to you Mary for this opportunity. I loved every minute of it.

Mary and Delbert were married in the Columbia River LDS Temple, Washington. LDS weddings are a bit different in that photography is not done inside the temple. The photography sessions are before or after or both. So to the rest of the world that is not LDS, this is a fairly typical LDS wedding photography shoot. The only thing a little different than what I personally do with weddings is that the bride did not have a solo bridal shoot. Before they were married we met at the temple and did, however, take the time to do a couples session. This helped prevent from running into timing issues between them getting out, the family group shoots, and driving all the way back to the reception for the happenings there.

There are LDS temples all over the world. Some are quite majestic and quite a site to behold. Not to mention the perfectly groomed grounds that visitors are able to enjoy. Perfect little settings for the couples and photographers as well. This is where she and Delbert were sealed for all eternity.

I had to throw this one it simply because I love emotion in any image and I love how she is so obviously holding on to him trusting that he will not drop her. LOL or should I say praying he won’t. Hahahaha.

It was such a hot hot hot day when they got married. Here are her children (minus the little guy in white and blue) waiting for mom to come out of the temple just newly married. They were such troopers in their suits. Such sweet kids!

Her son opening the door for her and her new husband, Delbert, to come out.

It is tradition in LDS weddings for all those with a wedding party to get their pictures taken on the steps. Usually because that is where everyone can be accommodated and still be visible if they cooperate. Some groupings can be quite large while others just go themselves. This was a medium sized group.

This picture is my all time favorite, simply because of the LOVE! This is really what this family is and always has been like. The love is real… and there is nothing better than the emotion felt right there!

Each home came with 2 boys and 1 girl. How could I not get one with Daddy and Daughter and Momma and Daughter.

They were headed in to the temple to grab their clothing as everyone was headed towards their place of reception a couple hours away. Here they were waving goodbye to their children.

Mary and Delbert were married on Mary’s Mother and Father’s 40th wedding anniversary. The neat thing is that her grandparents anniversary is a day after theirs. Apparently, a few other uncles, aunts, and other family members have been married in the same week. Sort of a family tradition. I also believe that the ring happened to be Mary’s moms ring. Mary, feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong here.

Thank you both Mary and Delbert. Your day was such a special day and your lives are too. I hold you in my heart always and am grateful to have been there. Love you all!

Wakeena Redsky DeLaCruz ~ Native American High School Graduate

Friday, January 25th, 2013

I have had the honor and privilege of photographing this beautiful young woman in her cultural regalia for her high school senior portraits. To tell you about her I have asked her mother Kamimi Ogemahgeshig-Estavillo to write in her words their heritage and about the clothing in this photo shoot. Here are her words about her daughter Wakeena and Wakeena’s heritage:

“Wakeena Redsky DeLaCruz is Quinault and Squaxin from the Northwest coastal nations and Anishinabe from the Eastern woodlands region. Wakeena has participated in canoe journeys since a young girl on the canoe Haynisisoos, which was named after her Uncle Phillip Martin Sr. She skippered this canoe (pictured) for the first time on the last canoe journey to Squaxin Island. Wakeena’s regalia is representative of her coastal and Anishinaabe ancestry. The cape design consists of a winged Eagle (zaagi) which is her Anishinaabe family clan (dodem). The buttons on the robe are representative of Anishinaabe fire signs, the buttons on the tail wing represent the council of three fires, the buttons along the body represent seventh generation and the four in the heart of the Eagle represent balance consistent with the four directions. Wakeena actively participates in her coastal nations traditions through drum and dance group, and is now in preparation to start jingle dance from Anishinaabe which will also be shown in her senior pictures. These photos taken are consistent with who Wakeena is and the traditional values she has carried and exemplified through her life. Participating in canoe journeys, drum and dance, potlatch, and jingle dance are very important aspects of her life and these photos represent who she is as a young Native American woman.”

This particular photoshoot is a series of three or four different shoots I will be bringing to you. As mentioned Wakeena is now in preparation to start jingle dance from Anishinaabe. Her grandmother is currently working on her jingle dress. We have some other shoots in the works to bring that to you and a few other very special images as well.
These photo sessions are dear to my heart and that of my family because of my husband and our children being Northwest Coastal Natives as well. The regalia with the button blanket is something that we are very familiar with ~ something we hold dear to our hearts. The art is a part of our home too which you will see represented on the canoe. There is symbolism and legends to the art you see on the blankets, canoes, totems, long houses. As you can see from Kamimi’s words, even the buttons have meaning.  My husband often includes the legend to the art that he draws (which can be found at WilkeronArt.com). Culture is a huge part of our life, so bringing this to you is more that just a thrill of a life time, it is a sacred honor. Thank you Wakeena and Kamimi. Thank you to all those that also helped in putting this shoot together.

I will start out with the unloading of the canoe and the owner Phil Martin Sr. with his wife Lynnell Martin.

There were others there helping. I wish I had more images with everyone in it so you all have your proper thanks. My gratitude is with all of you!

We were at the Point Grenville beach (which is currently in the process of being renamed to a native name that holds significance to the Quinault tribe). This next image pictures Point Grenville behind Wakeena.

The button blanket in the images above is Wakeena’s. The button blanket below in the next few images is that of her sister, Tashia Sky Delacruz.

Here you can see Wakeena wearing a traditional Northwest Coast hand woven hat. The next image was done so that you can see the design of the front of the canoe as well. I love the look of the canoes from all the different tribes. Often you will see a similar piece on many canoes. It sometimes goes along with the name of the canoe, or the crest of the clan, or just a legend that speaks to the canoe maker or family. I felt the angle here not only showed it while capturing Wakeena very flatteringly, but it also gave you a better view of the different paddles. Some useful and others for design as you can see with the artwork.

Of coarse ~ I love to play with different lenses. My fisheye gives such a fun view on life and worked wonders here. The first image here is awesome because it has some of my equipment and Wakeena’s mother with 2 sisters. I see this and just love that we caught this moment. (I am weird that way – where I love the back behind the scenes shots hahaha.)

In this next image Tashia (Wakeena’s sister) if straitening the heirloom necklace for the following shot. At that moment her mother Kamimi told me that the necklace there is close to 150 years old or older and had been in their family this entire time.

The colors of the sky and the beach are ever changing. Wakeena out on the beach near sunset was no less than breathtakingly stunning. She was such a trooper and it has all paid off beautifully.

I am looking forward to the next few sets from our series to be brought to all of you! Please feel free to leave love on the blog.

Thank you again to all involved. This is not just one moment in time. This is historical. Looking forward to the years events that are coming up and am grateful that all of you have touched my life.

It started with my kiddos…

Saturday, January 12th, 2013

Photography became serious because of my kiddos. I love and always have loved photography, but my kids are what helped me take it to the next level. I wanted great work of them on my walls and in books. So when I take time out to spotlight them, I don’t feel bad at all. My children are the reason I am able to do this all for you too. They are super sports willing to do anything for the perfect shoot.  ***I do not put my kids in danger, nor any of my clients. Everyone’s safety is my first priority*** Basically, the kids are willing to take their coats off and face the wind and chill to get the “look or shot”.
We live near a jetty that just adds a certain element to the beach shoots. I kept thinking – what a fantastic spot! I have to take my kiddos there. Christmas came and the kids received some awesome clothes – it was set! I had to take them there for pictures :)

Just before sharing the images I want to talk about clothes. People always ask me what to wear in a photo shoot. My suggestion is this… Matchy Matchy does not always work, but sometimes it does.  Sometimes I dress my girls alike and then my boys, but I mix it up slightly by having them in different colors than the other. So they don’t all have RED or all WHITE or all GREY. In the images below you will see that my boys all have 1/4 zip sweaters and the girls are in sweater dresses.  It worked out beautifully in my opinion.  I love that the sweater theme was the same, but the colors are mixed. I chose some colors that work really well with each other. Red, White, Black, Gray.  The boys all chose to wear the pants that they wanted. I think my oldest even chose to wear khaki’s LOL.  Usually I would say 3 or 5 main colors but a touch of white or cream  or black does not really count as a color all of the time.
In images words don’t always look great. Patterns are fine if you try to match it with a solid. If you don’t want anyone really matching like my kids do here – then choose Sunday dress, dress/casual, casual, PJ’s and then choose a set of colors…  Blue, Pink, Cream or Mustard, Gray, Black, with a touch of red or maroon.  Make sure that the colors are in the same family. You don’t want a Navy and a teal and an aqua blue.  Each blue is a different blue. Finding a color in the same tone is important. If you have to take a shirt with  you or a color swatch.

I am going to be posting some color ideas in the short future. I think  you will love the ideas. :)   Now some amazing picks of my babies.  Yes, I have mommy goggles. I know it and don’t care. You will see that each child has their own personality. Oh… and know that even my children (children of a photographer) are not easy to shoot. These kiddos made me WORK for these shots. LOL It is all part of being a kid and I love it!

You have to see this too. This was a highlight to our photo shoot. Look behind the kids in the water. There is a seal. Actually, there were 3 that kept bopping in and out of the water. The kids got a kick out of that.

I love to take pics of my kids looking at the camera of coarse because I love to see their faces… but the pics that thrill me are the ones that show their personalities or what I see on a daily basis. My one daughter is always in her own little world. She does not scream for the lime light ~ in fact, she is a quiet little soul most of the time. She is very difficult to photograph because I can rarely get eye contact from her. I don’t mind though because that is her. This next shot with her and her siblings happens to be a very favorite of mine.

When there are young kids I don’t like to mix the poses up very much. They are already out of their comfort zone with someone taking their pictures. Getting the shot is a big deal for these little guys. I do change things up though when I break into smaller groups or individual shots. It really all depends on the children and what they are telling me with how they respond to it all.  Actually, I find it is harder on the parents than the children LOL. Parents, even if your babies cry… it is ok. Your kids will never offend me. Crying is ok. Your caring for  your babies is ok. Never a need to apologize. In fact… those crying babies make for some cute pics too :) I have some arguing sisters in these next few pics that we totally get a kick out of here at home!

Funny thing is that we always tell them that one moment they are enemies and the next they are best friends. This was just one very small moment and we have it recorded for time. Hahaha. For the most part they are so good to each other. I like getting them in their element talking to each other or looking at the seals or watching their brothers. These are my daughters. They can look pretty at the camera… but it is all the other looks that as a mom mean something to me. As a photographer the different crops and angles are fun too.

My boys seriously crack me up! They each have such different personalities and are little goofballs. Samuel loves to cheese it up BIG time! LOL Edmond is a ham who loves to pose or be the center of  attention. The little man is definitely a youngest child. Jared is a young man. So responsible – but he does love attention too. He is not one for taking his picture so he does not always cooperate, but then he will let his personality shine. He is so awesome. Love that boy!

What is a photo shoot if each individual can’t shine for themselves? There is no way I could let these cuties dressed in their best get away without letting them each have their own moment. I usually ask where the child would like their pics or let them do their own thing while I go all paparazzi on them. This time Jared went and found a stick and was roaming around. Of coarse Samuel and Edmond had to pick up sticks too. Instead they were playing king of the mound LOL.  My girls were dancing, jumping, twirling in the wind. Nathanya is like a little dear bouncing and walking on air. Miriam loves to leap and just do her thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang.

Anyone who knows Jared knows that this is him! I am glad I spend time with each child waiting for the real them to pop out. This is the one I look on and think… now that is my boy! The boy who thrives on the smiles, laughs, and attention. The other images are cool, fun, and something to be proud of but this one is the one that touches my heart strings!

Samuel disguises himself as serious then changes in a split of a second. He just makes me laugh as I literally watch his brain in motion in each shot.

Sir Edmond! He begs me to get the camera out and go take pictures of him. He cracks me up!

Nathanya was not in the mood for a photo shoot today which is not unusual. She was not angry. She was not cooperative either. She kept her hands right inside her sleeves to keep them warm. In an image it is not ideal to have the hands not showing, but this is the way she likes to walk around every day. She has no body fat so any extra warmth she will take. The images are not being added to a contest… these are for me and our family.  I love that she is being her.  When we look back on it we can say – remember how  you always…. We still got some very fun shots from her playing on her own.

This is how she travels normally. She almost walks on air.

Ok mom – I think this is old news now! LOL

And last but not least ~ although in birth order she is first, is our Miriam.  All I have to do is ask her to go do her thing… and she does.

There you have it… My kids in our little world.

Beach Stroll with the Family

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

There comes a time in life when your kids go off to school and life starts going in different directions. Some of my most happy moments is when I can do a family session with one of these families that takes the time to stroll and just be family while I capture their togetherness. Hanging out on the beach with the C family kept me smiling. The moments captured were priceless. Enjoy!

Part of what makes my job so enjoyable is seeing the interaction in other families. This family had amazing communication and sent off awesome happy vibes.

After a session like this I run home looking forward to the editing time – to relive those happy faces all over.  How can you not smile after spending time with these guys?!

This image above is a square image. I often like to take similar shots and crop them differently to give another perspective of the moment and look for the home. Many frames are built as square – or if someone wants a centered image, the square works beautifully.  15×15, 20×20

The most popular crop in my collections is the 2×3 crop. This is the one that is shot in camera. This particular crop is one I love because it shows so much more. It does not feel cut off as I find the 8×10 feels.  The 8×10 crop works great for a head shot, sure. But when you combine Nature and Family you kind of want it all! For this reason I go with the 2×3. This can be a gorgeous 16×24. Those additional 4 inches captures a lot!

Again, I love my cropping. Here is the same image in a 10×20 (which can be a 15×30 or 20×40) crop. Where the square hones in on one aspect of an image, the 2×4 gives more. By the time you start moving on to the 10×20 you are getting more of an almost (not quite) panoramic type feel. I find that this can be so fun vertical or horizontal. I have quite a few of this crop in my own home. Just love it! Works wonders with storyboard work as well.

Often times, before a photo session, I will show my clients the many products that I offer. During that time I take note of the images that make them go ooooo or ahhhh. If they tend to lean towards images with textures (a bit more artistic) then I make sure that in the session I get enough images that I may play with them using textures. Offering a different and fun look for them to choose from. I loved this setting for textures because of the colors and features already there. I knew I could make it pop in a very fun way.

As you can see ~ The family has pets. These dogs were so fun. They loved the water and were game, along with everyone else, to jump right in!  When pets join the fun I like to take moments and get them individually as well. Many of life’s memories include these fury fun family members. For that reason it is important that they shine too!  In the next 3 you can see I took some very similar images which was the intent. I do that so that if a story board was requested I would have 3 images that match perfectly.

There were seagulls everywhere, the lighting was so dreamy, and the dog was being a dog. What a fun sequence to capture!

There are a variety of looks in just one small area. When talking to the boys I asked what setting each liked. By doing so, hopefully each member in the family will have something they enjoy come out of the session. One of the boys loved the grass. Because this family is 3/4ths men – I thought this son’s choice would be perfect for their together shot.

If dad gets to be with the boys then of coarse I wanted mom to have her moment too. I love how they were all willing to stick their feet in the water. The setting was serene.

You know – I wish I could take credit for what the animals, birds were doing while shooting this. Not only were the guys so natural at smiling and making my job easy – but the animals all seemed to know what I was aiming for and performed perfectly!

I can never explain how important mom and dad time is too. Maybe because I feel that that is so in our house. I love those tender moments. Ok, maybe it is the romantic in me. This beach had its fair share of perfect spots – and this couple were so beautiful together. It is no wonder they have such a darling family!

Here is another crop. I love this image. And yes – often you want a close up of the two – but there are times when a person wants a piece of art in their home. This is an example of that. This is a 10×30 crop. Very thin but works great over archways or doorways. If you have a collage on your wall the 10×30 adds a fun new dynamic to the set.

J&D Thanks so much for letting me spend an evening with you and  your boys! I loved how friendly, fun, and easy your family was to work with. Loved all the smiles and laughter! It was a perfect way to capture this time in all your lives. Thanks again!

Road Trip State line Break

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Spring Break came and my little sister called asking for some help. I decided it was important enough to drive to Utah with all my 5 children to help her move. On the way to Utah we said hello and goodbye to the states we left and the states we joined. When we reached the Utah/Idaho boarder we decided to do a funny picture with the kids. I wanted the children to be eating, drinking (soda), and goofing off so I could create a cute card to send to family and friends. My kids are the cutest little sports ever. Well, we did our mini photo shoot and were ready to head out when a car with 3 men stopped behind us. I was loading my children into the van when I heard one of the men call to the other 2 to say they needed to load back in their car because their camera/phone had died and they could not take the picture. Well, I braved up, (cause I am such a wimp with strangers!!!) and told them that if they wanted I would take a picture or 2 of them.  I gave them my business card and they took me up on my offer. :) I am so glad I did!

These 3 young men were from my state and were heading to a funeral and were brothers. I almost choked and had to hold back my tears because it reminded me of my husband and 2 of his brothers taking a road trip after their brother died in 1994.  It was a nice break and a special moment to take the photos of these young men. Thank you for the opportunity guys!!!

Here are their images and then a couple of my silly kids.

(I know they are all similar but we were shooting quickly in dust storm territory and there are only 4 :) )

This was a dust storm I had just past and decided my kids needed potty breaks so I could take a shot:

And while waiting for the boys to stretch their legs I had to play with my macro because macro is just so much fun!

And no trip is worth mentioning without pictures of my own kids!!!

I had to laugh when I found out that my husbands cousin made this sign :)   Thanks for looking and thanks guys for letting me capture this moment in your trip.

More Kitty Cats! Part B

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

This is part B of images of our cats.

We will start out with Pepper once again.  She happens to belong to my Nathanya:

Then her brother Midnight who belongs to Miriam and is such a goofy little kitty LOL:

Here is Charcoal doing what he does best – being Garfield!

And then our sweet Dusty:

We are grateful to Nathan’s co worker who parted with our 5 kitties so that our 5 children could love playing with them too.  I know only 4 are shown here.  QT is in the previous blog making 5.  Hope you enjoyed as much as my children did!

Cats and Kids part A

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

In our home we have 5 children.  My dear husband felt that was not enough and picked up 5 cats.  Now each child has their own cat.  The people we got them from have wondered how they are doing so this and the next blog are dedicated to them.  My children and their beautiful cats!

Here we have Nathanya and her kitten Pepper.  Each child named their own cat.  It is funny to see Nathanya with Pepper because they are both the smallest and skinniest.  Both so quiet and precious!

Next we have Dusty!  She is one of our first cats.  She is a great hunter and loves being near but not part of things.  She belongs to Edmond, but I take over until he is a bit more responsible.  I might just get him another cat and keep her for myself.

Charcoal came to us at the same time as Dusty.  He belongs to Jared!  He is so funny – we often call him Garfield.  He eats at our home then goes to neighbor homes and eats there too.  He is heavy as bricks but as sweet as a marshmallow puff!

More of Midnight will be coming in part B – but for now here he is.  Midnight belongs to my Miriam.  She used to have a Twighlight for a guinea pig.  She loves the dark cats.  We all are surprised at how passive and kind Midnight is.  He has his fun streak but he really loves to just be loved.  Edmond often will be found holding Midnight or any other cat he can get his hands on.

And last but not least is QT who belongs to Samuel.  He is our feistiest cat!  This cat loves to swat and growl at our kids but will come back to them and snuggle too.  He and Samuel are the perfect match.  Samuel does not mind being swat at and loves to play around with QT.

We have more action ones that I am sure you will all love, but this is the start.  Hope you enjoyed our babies :)

New Additions & Family Traditions

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Four years ago I became a photographer for this lovely family when their first precious bundle joined the world.  They invited me into their home and we spent a few hours capturing some sweet moments.  Each December (or around that period) I have the pleasure of taking their family pictures.  This year was an extra treat though because Baby Liv arrived and this was her time to shine!  When we took these she was 6 weeks old.  This is not a typical “newborn” photo shoot.  The Newborn is considered from birth to 2.5 weeks.  That is when the sleep heavily.  It can also go up to 4 weeks depending on the baby.  Liv here is such a pleasant happy baby which made it very nice and easy.  We were able to capture some sleeping time and rested periods.  Not all babies are as cooperative at this age.  Just a note to those who are considering a future Newborn Session.  I will let you now enjoy some family and baby moments here.

She is so so so adorable!  Hope you have enjoyed as much as I have.

3 T’s

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Here are Tatum, Teresa, and Triton.  Teresa had another dog who died a little back and she told me one thing she regrets is not having a picture of him to remember.  We decided that it was important that she get pictures of her boys Tatum and Triton.  It was so fun.  The boys had not gone to the beach before.  They did a fantastic job.  They were curious and looked around, but when it came time to sit or be somewhat still they did fabulous.  We also spent some time in the woods which was a fun experience as well.  I was in awe by these big boys of Teresa’s and am thankful for the time with them all.  Had so much fun with my 3 T’s :)

He kept yawning – was he trying to tell me something ;)   It was so cute!

Families come in all sizes and shapes, species too.  This family had a chance to capture this moment in time forever.  It was my pleasure to be a part of it.  Thank you Tatum, Triton, and Teresa!
