About CJ Wilkes Photography

Capturing Your Dance In The Rain is such a thrill and joy to me. Being able to look back on those special times through beautiful artistic imagery makes it a worthwhile challenge.
Learning to Dance in the Rain has been very easy for me. I am drawn to Water & Life! The exciting part for me is to teach you to enjoy your moment in the dance as I capture it from behind my camera.
Looking forward to Capturing Your Dance In The Rain

Challenging Myself

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

I think that I was blessed with 5 children to help challenge me to be better in every way!  This is true in my photography too.  I was so grateful for my girls and my youngest yesterday when they allowed me to go all paprazzi on them!   A little about my challenge – there is a great group that put out the more natural look challenge.  I went full force and when the kids were in back they were giggly.  My challenge to myself was to find the more serene moments and capture them.  I will let you be the judge of whether or not that was accomplished.  Oh – and a disclaimer for my youngest.  He will be fully dressed, but if we are home he looses all but his undies.  I don’t get it!  But there you go – my little almost streaker is featured as well.

I tell you it was all giggles heee heee heee!

Then of coarse Sir Personality had to join the mix:

Of coarse Miss Mimi makes it easy for me with her cats being near by:

And Miss Thanya reading Anne of Green Gables – so sweet!

But the one set that blows me away and gives me happy chills; the one that I am having framed in a Modern Knot Frame and put on my walls is this!

It is awesome offering my services to other families ~ but when I get to taking pictures of my own then I say “This is why I do it and what makes me LOVE my job ever so much!”

In the near future I will post images of my other two boys.  Thanks for looking.

Time out for Family!

Monday, October 17th, 2011

This sweet family has been waiting a long time to have their family pictures done.  The last time they had one together was before loved ones passed away.  What an honor it has been for me to spend time with them and offer them my services – for them to have for always.  I think this shoot hit me as one of my very special ones because I too come from a family where I had lost my father and brother.  Our family has not had a family shoot since.  I miss those times when we come together and capture that moment in time.  I applaud this sweet family for celebrating life still going forward and the moment now.  Thank you Teresa and family!!!  I hold this time in my heart and hope you will too!

I love when we can separate a shoot into Mom with daughters or individual families or Father with sons…  Right here is mom with her 2 daughters.

We then did some images of sister with her three sons.  The boys were the sweetest easiest boys to shoot I have had in a long time.  They were GREAT!

There is nothing like Sisters either!!!  I love the playfulness between the two of these sisters :)

No matter where you are in life – taking time to come together & documenting it will be one of those times you will never regret.  Again a HUGE thank you to Teresa and her family.

Siblings ~ Nothing but love here!

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Often times after doing a High School Senior shoot I end up doing a family shoot with it – which is so awesome!  I am glad that people stop to capture the entire family so they can look back on this time down the road.  There is nothing like siblings and the connection there.  This trio just makes me smile!

I have never seen such brotherly love like I do with these two!  It is the kind of love that lasts through the years!!!!

You could tell that Sam adored his big sister Ally.  How would it be to have two amazing older siblings and doting parents.  It was very pleasant hanging out with all of you!

I can honestly say that the entire time I was with these guys I did not hear one squabble amongst any of the siblings.  All I can say is someone(s) is doing something right.

and one of my very favorite aside from the silly faces :P

There is nothing like family time and love!  Thank you!

Family ~ Davenport, WA

Groups and large families can be the best!!!  Especially when you get a family like this in their own environment and home.  What is even better is seeing people take the time to capture their family on camera for memory sake.  That just melts my heart – because they do not stay like this forever.  They grow up and move on rather quickly.  Just a few of my favorites from this session:

Thank you so much for letting me spend this time with all of you!  Families are what make the world go round – and yours is just so fun to hang with!!!

Because of military I needed to remove these for the safety of family and issues with internet.  Thank you for the comments on this session.  They are a beautiful family – and it was fun!!!

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

I live by the policy that you should not be afraid to ask.  What is the worse that can happen?  I say no.  But often times I do say YES!  In fact, I love saying yes.  When editing pictures I have to choose which ones are the best to edit and what would look better or best for each image.  There are times though when you would love 2 pictures – but the closing deal would be if this head where on the other image with the better clothing.  Or – Darn it, I wish that was in color or black and white.   Granted – there are times when changing them will not work because of color issues or muddiness of the conversion to black and white.  Some just don’t work.  Head swaps can be done – YES.  Fat can be taken in.

If I do a session and you would like a change it is doable.  I do charge for my time – this falls into extended editing service – but it can be done and I do not mind doing it at all.

Here are some examples from the last session that I posted about.  1 head swap and a change from black & white to color.

Here the shirt crease under her chin bothered mom.  Or maybe the belly showing – but her face looks so sweet and her eyes are very visible.

Very cute and the shirt issues gone – DARN!  Would love face in image one on this body!  :(   Well, no need to frown – it can and has been done :) .

Here is the switch from Black and White to color for this coming image.  It worked well on this particular image – but sometimes I will say no since it just will not work out because of the colors – lighting or so forth:

Other instances that may need a head swap may be in family photos.  If the location is the same and the images familiar it is USUALLY fairly quick to do this.  It takes time of coarse but can often be done without too much trouble.  You won’t know if it can be done or not if you don’t ask though – and my goal is to make you completely happy and proud enough to display your images in your home to your family and friends.

Another Year ~ Children

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Each year children get their pictures at school.  Why do we do this?  Well, it marks a mile marker in life.  The progress is documented.  I love to see the images and the faces, but feel that time and effort should be made so that the images are not just ones placed in a book and used for blackmail.  Why not have images that the children would be proud of and that you would want to have displayed in your home.  These are special moments in their lives – ones they should be able to cherish.

This sweet family invited me to take their pictures in their back yard.  It was great and they were adorable.

There is nothing cuter than a little child who is proud of having lost their teeth.  LOL  Thank you for this special moment that I had the chance to share with your family D&J!

Boys and Girls

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Time goes quickly and the little ones grow.  Pretty soon they are not just babies, but boys and girls.  They run and play and just live life to its fullest.  When I started out it happened because I had some beautiful children that I wanted to capture in their youth.  I wanted to document those moments in life that a memory cannot always hold still forever.  It was a matter of turning these into everlasting moments.

When I go with my family anywhere I rarely go without my camera.  If I am without it I bite myself for missing this or that.  Well, I could not and would not this time.  Not only that – I had an excuse for wanting to play with a new lens.   Here are just a few to share with you, because although I have fantastic clients – these little ones are the reason I have become the photographer I am today.

My five consist of Miriam, twins ~ Jared and Nathanya, Samuel, and Edmond

We attempt to make things fair so that they all feel the equal love we have for them.  I extend that into my photography as well.  One thing I have started is a wall of photographic art of my kids.  I have made larger (16×24) metal prints that they can take with them once they have grown and moved out.  At the moment I have been working on getting Jared’s.  Here are some of the images I am trying to choose from:

Then just because I like a fun silhouette

Nathanya is such a trouper and was begging for pictures.  I of coarse could not resist, but had to hurry since she has NO body fat and it was windy + cold out.  I am so glad because they turned out adorable!

Then Miriam.  She is always photogenic.  However, for whatever reason I always get closeups of her and rarely a full body.  I was ecstatic that it worked out this time!

I have shared Samuel and Edmond’s.  Will have more of them in the future.  Meanwhile, Thanks for allowing me this time to share my babies.  :)

Coming Together ~ Family

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

One thing I look forward to each year is taking pictured of P family.  This year I was blessed to take pictures of Michelle’s family as well.  Thank you to the L family for making it an extra special year.

This family made my job as easy as pie.  We had gotten to the location to find the tide was higher than I had EVER seen it.  Usually we would go on the beach and have quite a variety to choose from for pictures.  Not this time.  However, it did not really matter.  These guys were fantastic and did not need tons of places to look great and show the love.

Once again Thank you to Michelle and Cameron for inviting your extended family this year and letting me take your family pictures.

Sometimes family can take a while to get family pictures because as we get older we tend to scatter across country or countries.  In this case they have had family abroad and were able to celebrate all together for the holiday season.

We did some images with Siblings, Siblings with spouses, and also Boys, then girls + mom and dad.  They also had 2 married couples and we were able to get their little budding family shots as well.

I love seeing interaction in couples – especially in those who have spent a lifetime together.  Their children are starting families of their own – and when seeing the L couple I can’t help but think what a GREAT example of love they must have been to their beautiful children.

This one was one of my favorites because you can see the sparkle in her eye as her hubby snuck a peck on the cheek!

Often times when doing large families there tends to actually be more than one session within the one session.  For myself I don’t mind at all because not only do I have a semi large family myself – but was born into one and married into an even larger family.  When we get together and actually do family photos we too all want to get our little family group shots at the same time.   It is an honor and pleasure to be involved with these sorts of ventures!!!

I often will include a Black and White, Color, then a fun artistic in every session.  I find that everyone has different taste and some like a clean edit while others like a great Black and white, then an artistic one makes for some very fun canvases or Metal prints.

Thanks for looking – and for all the sweet comments.  Know that I could not have such awesome pictures without all the amazing people I get to shoot.  Thank you all!

Taking Turns…

Monday, December 13th, 2010

You know – photographers shoot and shoot and shoot, but rarely do we actually get to have our own family pictures taken by someone else.  Well a dear friend of mine who happens to be a FANTASTIC photographer ~ Jessica Lemmons ~ agreed to take our family pictures.  So we exchanged.  I did hers and she did mine.  The cool part is that she lives in the mountains which provided some amazing shooting areas!!!

So here are the images I took of her and her family.  Enjoy.

Any child’s dream – to run free in the open :)

I felt right at home with her family.  They could relate to having 5 kids.  I know there are plenty who have multiple kids but here in Washington you get a whole lot of gawking and comments.  When you run into someone who has been there and just gets it you feel like you are around family!  Such a darling, fun, loving family!

Jessica is not only a great photographer – she is a great MOM too.  It was hard not to get teary eyed around her and her children with all the love you could see in their faces.  It was precious!

Thanks again for the opportunity Jessica.  It was such a pleasure to take all your pictures – and I absolutely adore the ones of our family you took.

Opposing Teams combine to make a great FAMILY!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

This was a very FUN session.   The uniting of these two families is unique in that this sports loving family come from opposing teams.  BYU verses U of U.  I had to laugh at the taunts – but at the same time they were so loving and in love with each other.  You can truly feel it through all the images.

Thank you Shaney and Rand for the chance to take your pictures for this special time in your lives!!!
