About CJ Wilkes Photography

Capturing Your Dance In The Rain is such a thrill and joy to me. Being able to look back on those special times through beautiful artistic imagery makes it a worthwhile challenge.
Learning to Dance in the Rain has been very easy for me. I am drawn to Water & Life! The exciting part for me is to teach you to enjoy your moment in the dance as I capture it from behind my camera.
Looking forward to Capturing Your Dance In The Rain

Beach Stroll with the Family

November 18th, 2012

There comes a time in life when your kids go off to school and life starts going in different directions. Some of my most happy moments is when I can do a family session with one of these families that takes the time to stroll and just be family while I capture their togetherness. Hanging out on the beach with the C family kept me smiling. The moments captured were priceless. Enjoy!

Part of what makes my job so enjoyable is seeing the interaction in other families. This family had amazing communication and sent off awesome happy vibes.

After a session like this I run home looking forward to the editing time – to relive those happy faces all over.  How can you not smile after spending time with these guys?!

This image above is a square image. I often like to take similar shots and crop them differently to give another perspective of the moment and look for the home. Many frames are built as square – or if someone wants a centered image, the square works beautifully.  15×15, 20×20

The most popular crop in my collections is the 2×3 crop. This is the one that is shot in camera. This particular crop is one I love because it shows so much more. It does not feel cut off as I find the 8×10 feels.  The 8×10 crop works great for a head shot, sure. But when you combine Nature and Family you kind of want it all! For this reason I go with the 2×3. This can be a gorgeous 16×24. Those additional 4 inches captures a lot!

Again, I love my cropping. Here is the same image in a 10×20 (which can be a 15×30 or 20×40) crop. Where the square hones in on one aspect of an image, the 2×4 gives more. By the time you start moving on to the 10×20 you are getting more of an almost (not quite) panoramic type feel. I find that this can be so fun vertical or horizontal. I have quite a few of this crop in my own home. Just love it! Works wonders with storyboard work as well.

Often times, before a photo session, I will show my clients the many products that I offer. During that time I take note of the images that make them go ooooo or ahhhh. If they tend to lean towards images with textures (a bit more artistic) then I make sure that in the session I get enough images that I may play with them using textures. Offering a different and fun look for them to choose from. I loved this setting for textures because of the colors and features already there. I knew I could make it pop in a very fun way.

As you can see ~ The family has pets. These dogs were so fun. They loved the water and were game, along with everyone else, to jump right in!  When pets join the fun I like to take moments and get them individually as well. Many of life’s memories include these fury fun family members. For that reason it is important that they shine too!  In the next 3 you can see I took some very similar images which was the intent. I do that so that if a story board was requested I would have 3 images that match perfectly.

There were seagulls everywhere, the lighting was so dreamy, and the dog was being a dog. What a fun sequence to capture!

There are a variety of looks in just one small area. When talking to the boys I asked what setting each liked. By doing so, hopefully each member in the family will have something they enjoy come out of the session. One of the boys loved the grass. Because this family is 3/4ths men – I thought this son’s choice would be perfect for their together shot.

If dad gets to be with the boys then of coarse I wanted mom to have her moment too. I love how they were all willing to stick their feet in the water. The setting was serene.

You know – I wish I could take credit for what the animals, birds were doing while shooting this. Not only were the guys so natural at smiling and making my job easy – but the animals all seemed to know what I was aiming for and performed perfectly!

I can never explain how important mom and dad time is too. Maybe because I feel that that is so in our house. I love those tender moments. Ok, maybe it is the romantic in me. This beach had its fair share of perfect spots – and this couple were so beautiful together. It is no wonder they have such a darling family!

Here is another crop. I love this image. And yes – often you want a close up of the two – but there are times when a person wants a piece of art in their home. This is an example of that. This is a 10×30 crop. Very thin but works great over archways or doorways. If you have a collage on your wall the 10×30 adds a fun new dynamic to the set.

J&D Thanks so much for letting me spend an evening with you and  your boys! I loved how friendly, fun, and easy your family was to work with. Loved all the smiles and laughter! It was a perfect way to capture this time in all your lives. Thanks again!

We have moved!

October 20th, 2012

For those of you who did not know, I have moved! My husband has been given an opportunity to work with the Quinault Tribe in Tahola, WA. Because of this change of job we have had to move our family as well. We are now living in Copalis Beach, WA. It has been a new adventure for us all. We found a home that was bank owned and have bought it. It has had lots of work and still does. We are enjoying it and working hard at painting – unpacking – and all the things that come with a move into a home that needs tender loving care. On top of all that – My husband is having to study for the PE exam that is coming up in a week.

Needless to say, I have not been doing much work with my photography. My internet has not been up until this week. It still has some tweaks, but I am able to do some editing now which, surprisingly, I have missed! In the middle of our move here I did shoot one family session. They have been so good to wait on my huge move and internet issues. I am very grateful for them on this. I should have their session up for a peek in the next week or two. Meanwhile, I wanted to give a shout out and say – yes, I am still in business. I am excited for all the sessions that are coming up soon. It is fun to prepare for the new events. Meanwhile – Here is an image of my meadow looking out from my bedroom and a piece of my driveway from my office. My new little piece of HEAVEN!

This is the driveway coming up to our house. I envision some beautiful shots from it with my kiddos. If you want a gorgeous lane – I know the perfect spot :) .

And now to my new little piece of Heaven:

And a closer up so you can see the picnic tables better :) There are actually 3 but who is counting. So excited for some awesome morning sessions. Whether it be with just my kiddos or with neighbors or with any of my amazing clients!

I laugh when I think I have a meadow! Did I mention all the beaches within minutes of my home as well? Can’t wait to see you all coming to visit my corner of the world for your sessions. No worries, I still travel as well. It is good to be back. Missed you all!

Kaitlyn Martin ~ Singer/Songwriter ~ High School Senior

August 12th, 2012

This uber talented girl was such a great sport! Let me first tell you about her. She is a singer/songwriter. She has a song already recorded and available to purchase with a video as well on youtube.  The song is “Hey You”.  Here is the link to the video .  If you decide you want to purchase the song you can do so here at iTunes .  She has a fan page on facebook for those of you who would like to follow her progress.  You can visit her Facebook Page HERE .

Kaitlyn graduated from High School this year.  She is the winner of Terrace Idol 2012.  She performs all over Seattle including at events such as The Police Explorer’s Talent Show, Art festivals, and Farmer markets ~ Drawing some of the largest crowds the events managers have seen in the years they have held their events.

Being Kaitlyn’s photographer has been so fun for me, not only because of the shoot – but my children have become a HUGE fan of hers, telling me that she is their new favorite music artist, that Selina Gomez is now their number 2 LOL. It is very “COOL” for them to meet and know a recorded musician. Not only that – Kaitlyn’s parents are some amazing people!  Active with all of their 4 children – spending time with them doing family adventures. They are genuinely good people who I enjoy knowing.

So for our Photoshoot we hit 2 main locations. The first being Seattle. There is a specific alley that I love for its character. Then we went on to Fort Casey on Widbey Island. It is also another favorite place for me to shoot. I love the versatility of the park. From barracks to beaches to light houses. The place offers to much – and again the personality. Simply could not have asked for a better location.  On the way to Fort Casey we also made a super quick stop to a mini field that most people do not know about. It is a place I had stumbled across with my own family. Usually containing tall grasses for fun shoots, this time it sported a field of purple thistles. It was a perfect match for the outfit she had chosen, unbeknownst to us.  So here is her photo session(s).

Kaitlyn Martin ~ Definitely a name you do not want to forget. Check out her work. This girl can’t help but make you smile, from her images to her music!  Thanks so much Kaitlyn for spending the day with me. It was a full day but as everyone can see – a very successful shoot! Looking forward to hearing more of your amazing songs too!

Water Tower Bridal Shoot (Modeling)

July 23rd, 2012

Brides are very much what I truly enjoy shooting. I love that there are so many different personalities, dresses, likes, and overall combinations. All of it makes my mind work hard to create the PERFECT shoot for each individual. I love dramatic when it comes to brides and the look we are trying to achieve. This session worked out perfectly for it!  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Tell me what you think of the Water Tower Bridal shoot!

M&J Engagement

July 23rd, 2012

Just a note for those that know M and J: Unfortunately the wedding has been called off. However, the images are so beautiful I am still going to share. They are 2 good people who decided that the time and place was just not right for them. They are still friends which is great considering what happy people they are.

It is not uncommon for me to wait to post engagement, bridal, or wedding images. Many times the couple want me to wait until after they have sent out their invites so that family sees the images for the first time in their invites. M&J were fun to shoot because they were up for a whole lot of fun. We did a little hiking and found some beautiful locations for them to get the best images. They were so in love which made it for quite an emotional high. You will see in the images I post here.

This is M letting you all know that YOU want to be next to have your photos taken by CJ Wilkes Photography! Hahahahaha

This image above is one of my all time favorites. I love the moment when they are working together to create the heart in the sand. Simply makes me smile!

Thank you for choosing me to take your engagement pictures. It was such a great day and adventure!

Boudoir ~ The perfect gift for your Loved one!

July 23rd, 2012

For those afraid of what you will see – I promise there is nothing here that you will not see at a beach or pool. If you are too concerned about it just check back next week when I have displayed the next session. I will scroll the images down some so that it is not appearing first thing when you bring up my blog.  Also, if you have any concerns feel free to email me.  Thank you.

I always say this is my favorite or that is my favorite.  Guess what?! It is true – I love photography and the different ways I can express my art. One of my very favorites of all time is Boudoir. I love giving women or men (Dudoir) the opportunity to look beautiful, sexy, their very best in an artistic, tasteful, and very fun way – for their significant other.  It does not matter the person’s age or size… most of us want to have the best of us to give to our loved ones.

Most of my boudoir/dudoir clients choose the option of an 8×8 or 10×10 album for their mate. I have also found that they usually choose a black cover, whether it be cloth, floral cloth, or leather. I found that very interesting because it reminds me of the little black book.  Anyhow – in the past the loved ones often come to me and thank me profusely for helping their partner get them the “PERFECT” gift. I tell people that shooting boudoir is something I do to help keep that spark alive!

She had decided to give this as a gift to her husband.  JG had me laughing – she was so daring, funny, and completely in her element. I think the hardest part of the entire session was narrowing down which images to exclude from the album.  You did an amazing job JG.  Thank you for the opportunity to do this for you and your hubby!

Please scroll down to look at the images. As mentioned above – the scrolling is to protect those that are sensitive to viewing Boudoir images – even though these are VERY conservative and tastefully done.

When editing the images all I could think of was – she looks like someone familiar, when my husband tells me he thinks she looks like a plus size Nichole Kidman. I agree – but think JG is much cuter!!!

Thanks again to JG – you rocked your session girlie!

Road Trip State line Break

April 24th, 2012

Spring Break came and my little sister called asking for some help. I decided it was important enough to drive to Utah with all my 5 children to help her move. On the way to Utah we said hello and goodbye to the states we left and the states we joined. When we reached the Utah/Idaho boarder we decided to do a funny picture with the kids. I wanted the children to be eating, drinking (soda), and goofing off so I could create a cute card to send to family and friends. My kids are the cutest little sports ever. Well, we did our mini photo shoot and were ready to head out when a car with 3 men stopped behind us. I was loading my children into the van when I heard one of the men call to the other 2 to say they needed to load back in their car because their camera/phone had died and they could not take the picture. Well, I braved up, (cause I am such a wimp with strangers!!!) and told them that if they wanted I would take a picture or 2 of them.  I gave them my business card and they took me up on my offer. :) I am so glad I did!

These 3 young men were from my state and were heading to a funeral and were brothers. I almost choked and had to hold back my tears because it reminded me of my husband and 2 of his brothers taking a road trip after their brother died in 1994.  It was a nice break and a special moment to take the photos of these young men. Thank you for the opportunity guys!!!

Here are their images and then a couple of my silly kids.

(I know they are all similar but we were shooting quickly in dust storm territory and there are only 4 :) )

This was a dust storm I had just past and decided my kids needed potty breaks so I could take a shot:

And while waiting for the boys to stretch their legs I had to play with my macro because macro is just so much fun!

And no trip is worth mentioning without pictures of my own kids!!!

I had to laugh when I found out that my husbands cousin made this sign :)   Thanks for looking and thanks guys for letting me capture this moment in your trip.

More Kitty Cats! Part B

February 5th, 2012

This is part B of images of our cats.

We will start out with Pepper once again.  She happens to belong to my Nathanya:

Then her brother Midnight who belongs to Miriam and is such a goofy little kitty LOL:

Here is Charcoal doing what he does best – being Garfield!

And then our sweet Dusty:

We are grateful to Nathan’s co worker who parted with our 5 kitties so that our 5 children could love playing with them too.  I know only 4 are shown here.  QT is in the previous blog making 5.  Hope you enjoyed as much as my children did!

Cats and Kids part A

February 4th, 2012

In our home we have 5 children.  My dear husband felt that was not enough and picked up 5 cats.  Now each child has their own cat.  The people we got them from have wondered how they are doing so this and the next blog are dedicated to them.  My children and their beautiful cats!

Here we have Nathanya and her kitten Pepper.  Each child named their own cat.  It is funny to see Nathanya with Pepper because they are both the smallest and skinniest.  Both so quiet and precious!

Next we have Dusty!  She is one of our first cats.  She is a great hunter and loves being near but not part of things.  She belongs to Edmond, but I take over until he is a bit more responsible.  I might just get him another cat and keep her for myself.

Charcoal came to us at the same time as Dusty.  He belongs to Jared!  He is so funny – we often call him Garfield.  He eats at our home then goes to neighbor homes and eats there too.  He is heavy as bricks but as sweet as a marshmallow puff!

More of Midnight will be coming in part B – but for now here he is.  Midnight belongs to my Miriam.  She used to have a Twighlight for a guinea pig.  She loves the dark cats.  We all are surprised at how passive and kind Midnight is.  He has his fun streak but he really loves to just be loved.  Edmond often will be found holding Midnight or any other cat he can get his hands on.

And last but not least is QT who belongs to Samuel.  He is our feistiest cat!  This cat loves to swat and growl at our kids but will come back to them and snuggle too.  He and Samuel are the perfect match.  Samuel does not mind being swat at and loves to play around with QT.

We have more action ones that I am sure you will all love, but this is the start.  Hope you enjoyed our babies :)
